Difficulties in machining stainless steel castings

The shrinkage rate of stainless steel is much larger than that of cast iron, so in order to prevent the defects of shrinkage porosity and shrinkage holes in castings, steel casting manufacturers have adopted measures such as risers, cold iron and subsidies in the casting process. So what are the difficulties in processing stainless steel castings?

1. The work hardening of stainless steel castings is serious: the tendency of work hardening is large during cutting, and the cutting tool in the work hardening area will shorten the life of the tool.

2. Large cutting force and high cutting temperature: the strength of stainless steel is large, and the tangential stress and plastic deformation are large when the steel casting manufacturer is cutting, so the cutting force is large. In addition, the thermal conductivity of stainless steel is very poor, and the high temperature is often concentrated in the narrow and long area near the cutting edge of the tool, which accelerates the wear of the tool.

3. It is easier to stick to the knife when machining stainless steel castings: no matter what kind of stainless steel it is, it has the characteristics of tough chips and high cutting temperature during machining.

4. Tool wear is accelerated: stainless steel contains high melting point elements and high plasticity, and the cutting temperature is high, resulting in accelerated tool wear, frequent tool sharpening and tool change, thus affecting the production efficiency of steel casting manufacturers and increasing the cost of tool use .
